An Elevator Speech on Training

A person who feels that training is neither important nor necessary has never experienced training that is embedded in a true learning organization.  In an organization that embraces and is dedicated to the development of its employees’ knowledge and skills, training is not seen as the means to an end.  It is seen as only a part of the system that will develop human capital.  The goal of any training should be for learners to gain knowledge or skills that they can then apply to their daily activities which will result in improved performance.  Training is important to develop explicit knowledge that is essential for performance improvement, however for learners to transfer this knowledge effectively, training must be supported by mentoring, informal learning opportunities, social networking, and experiences on the job which allow learners to develop tacit knowledge.  If implemented correctly, training can result in high quality performance or service through collaboration and knowledge sharing.  By ensuring that the training plan is aligned with the business strategy of an organization, it guarantees that workers will be developing knowledge and skills that align with the organization’s goals and expectations.  Training can also help to encourage employee engagement by providing opportunities for workers to develop new skills allowing them to advance in the organization.  Training is essential to keep information current, employees engaged, and to ensure that organizations remain relevant to its stakeholders. Provided the necessary support, training can become the lifeblood of any true learning organization.

  1. Kristy,
-- I liked your opening statement regarding a true learning environment would be a good hook to catch the CEO’s attention.
-- I liked the emphasis on explicit knowledge for improving performance and the importance of providing follow-up support and mentoring to assure the transfer of knowledge.
-- You made an excellent point that by ensuring that the training plan is aligned with the business strategy of the organization, it will help to assure the employees have the skills and knowledge needed to achieve the organizations goals and objectives.
-- I also liked your last statement that training is essential to keep information current, employees engaged and to ensure that the organization remains relevant to it’s stakeholders. If this was a publicly trade company, you’d add stockholders.

  2. Kristy, I like the way that you are challenging the leader of the company in your opening statement to embrace training but in a non-insulting way. Your elevator speech flows logically in sequence and goes over the key points that tie training to business success. Towards the end of your speech you reiterate how essential training is along with key management support.
